DNS Propagation for Mac

After you change a DNS record, every resolver picks it up at its own pace. DNS Propagation asks several public resolvers at once and shows which of them see the new value yet. Free in Netutilus.

What it’s for

When you change a DNS record, resolvers around the world keep serving the old answer until their copy expires. DNS Propagation asks several public resolvers at once and shows whether they agree, and whether they show the new value yet.

Use it when

  • You moved a website to a new server and want to know when everyone sees it.
  • You changed mail or verification records and a service still sees the old ones.
  • Some people reach a site and others don’t.

Reading the result

Enter a domain, pick a record type and click Check. Each resolver’s answer is listed beside its name.

  • With an Expected value, such as the new server’s address, the summary counts how many resolvers show it: “4 of 6 resolvers show the expected value”.
  • Without one, it counts the largest group of matching answers: “5 of 6 resolvers agree”.
  • A resolver that can’t be reached is shown apart and not counted.

What you might see

  • Some resolvers still show the old value. Their copies haven’t expired yet. The old record’s TTL says how long that can take, at most. Check again later.
  • Answers vary by location (CDN). Large sites answer each region with nearby servers, so different answers are normal there.
  • No records found everywhere. The record doesn’t exist, or the name has a typo.

Tip: Before a planned move, lower the record’s TTL a day ahead. The change then reaches everyone within minutes.

Options worth knowing

  • The resolvers are Google, Cloudflare, AdGuard, NextDNS, RethinkDNS and DNS.SB, asked over encrypted DNS. Your provider’s resolver isn’t among them: check it with DNS Lookup.
