GeoIP for Mac

GeoIP shows roughly where an IP address is and which provider it belongs to: city, country, ISP and AS number. Netutilus looks it up for any address you enter, or for your own public IP. Free.

What it’s for

Every public IP address is registered to a provider in some place. GeoIP looks an address up, or a hostname’s address, and shows its country, city, provider and network.

Use it when

  • You want to know which provider and country an address belongs to.
  • You want to see how the internet sees you: click My IP.
  • You’re checking that a VPN puts you in the country it should.

Reading the result

Enter an address or a hostname and click Lookup, or click My IP for your own public address.

  • Country, Region and City are where the address is registered. For a home connection that’s usually the provider’s region, not your street.
  • ISP and Organization are who the address belongs to.
  • AS Number is the provider’s network on the internet. Every address one provider uses shares it.
  • Coordinates and Timezone come with the location, and are just as approximate. A map marks the spot.

What you might see

  • A city far from where you are. Location databases often place an address where its provider’s equipment or office is. A VPN or iCloud Private Relay shows its exit location instead of yours.
  • No location is known for this address. Private addresses such as 192.168.x.x exist only inside a network, so they have no location. See IP addresses.
  • Too many requests. The location service limits how often it can be asked. Wait a minute and try again.

Options worth knowing

  • Lookups go to ipapi.co, and to ipwho.is if the first one fails. Each one sends the address you asked about. See Permissions & Privacy.
  • The menu bar item shows your public address and its country all the time, without opening this tool.
